omg, sry i hit u!

I was on my way to Sean’s last Friday after a tolerable day of work (there were cupcakes), excited that we had tickets to see The Town at 7:00, wondering if I’d allow myself to eat sweet potato fries for dinner (you know, given the aforementioned cupcakes), and pretty much minding my own damned business, when all of a sudden (and quite without warning)—WHAP!—my car lurched forward, my seatbelt yanked me backward, and before I had time to look out my rearview, some idiot on a motorcycle had pulled up beside me and was waving rather obnoxiously for me to move off the road. I responded with a kneejerk “STFU!”, put the car in park, and looked back to see a crumpled minivan on my rear end.

After a bit of stunned hesitation, the driver and I got out and she apologized profusely for being too caught up in a text message to realize that I wasn’t going as fast as she was and subsequently driving her car into my spare tire. Fortunately, she was super nice and kept asking if I was ok (physically, yes, but almost shocked enough to walk right into oncoming traffic). And since it was pretty obviously my first rodeo, she even told me exactly what information I needed to take off of her insurance card.

Moments before we parted ways, a cop pulled up, asked if we were ok, and then chastised both of us for not being of sound enough mind right after our accident to think of the other drivers on the road: “Next time, pull over,” he ordered. Oh absolutely, officer, I’ll be sure to pencil in “Move it, lady!” right next to date I’ve picked out for my head-on collision.

Anyway, thanks in one part to the lady’s pleasant attitude about the whole mess and in another to the fact that my beastly car showed no outward signs of damage (as always—Honda CR-V FTW!), I managed keep it together long enough to not cause a scene and put it all back together by the time I got to Sean’s.

The moral of this story (apart from the obvious “don’t text and drive” one) is that the road is a violent and unruly place for the humble commuter, so your job sure as hell better be worth it.

Lady in white

About a month and a half ago, I set out on my first wedding dress expedition. You remember, don’t you? I was itching to see a bride in the mirror, but reluctant to take her home with me. Anywho, that shopping trip turned out to be just a tad more significant than I intended it to be. Because the second dress I tried on? Yeah, it was the winner.

Now, as everyone who keeps up with me on ye olde Book of Faces well knows, I didn’t buy The Dress the first time I tried it on. Oh no! Because there could potentially have been a million other dresses out there that would have thrilled me more than The Dress, and how would I ever have known if I didn’t try at least half of them on? So last weekend while Sean was inventorying, my mom and I ventured to a second shop where I spent at least two hours trying on dresses that all ended up not thrilling me as much as The Dress. And as soon as we pulled out of our parking space I suggested that we return to shop numero uno for a second go-round with The Dress.

As soon as I walked in, the sweet sales girl from my first visit met me with a friendly “Hi, Sarah! I’ve already pulled The Dress. Do you want to try on any others while you’re here?” Well of course! I’ve seen nowhere near a million yet, dear. So before giving The Dress another shot, I wiggled into three more that were similarly styled. And while one of those three (admittedly) was lovely, it just didn’t have the same impact as The Dress. (As it turns out, lovely isn’t quite my bridal style. Nope, next October Imma be freaking poopin’ majesty all over the place.)

Long story short—I didn’t have to try on a million dresses! I (technically) didn’t even have to try on five! I made my first big wedding decision without my typical put-it-off-until-the-very-last-minute-because-something better-might-come-along-next-July-YOU-NEVER-KNOW reticence! Now all I need is a venue and, you know, a date, and I’ll be good to go!

So, would you like to see what holding my breath, closing my eyes, and diving in hath yielded? Because I was allowed to take pictures. Lots and lots of pictures. Are you ready? Ok, here we go. Hold on to your hats—Sarah in her wedding dress:

Twister

How the two Dallas dwellers I know responded to the news that a tornado was roaming around in their backyard a couple of weeks ago.

Sarah: Hey! Watch out! A tornado is on its way to your apartment!
Sean: I know! I’ve got my camera and I’m gonna go outside to see how close I can get!

Sarah: Don’t mean to scare you, but did you hear the sirens? There’s a tornado in Dallas!
Erin: *no answer, hiding in bathtub*
