Dear Liane: A Cake Tale

1. Fontant is edible
2. but also incredibly sweet. I'd advise against comsuming it.
3. No matter how well you wield a spatula, it's impossible to smooth all the bumps and ridges out of icing. If you want a flawless finish on your cakes, you have to cover them in fondant.

P.S. My beau has volunteered me to make the groom's cake for HIS SISTER'S WEDDING! This is probably because I made him knead fondant for an hour. I probably deserve it.

P.P.S. I was just kidding being upset, but not really about deserving punishment.

A baker's assistant weighs in:

Wilton fondant is THE worst. Yuck
If you make fondant, it's not bad, it tastes like marshmallow.
Buy a scraper- it's like a flat piece of metal... run it over buttercream and then put in the fridge for ~1 hour. Then turn on the hot water, and after running the scraper under the hot water use it on the buttercream- the butter melts and gives a smoother finish- not as clean and beautiful as fondant but smoother and nicely finished. :)

CHOCOLATE fondant is yummy. It tastes like tootsie rolls. And it's easier to work with than white/vanilla fondant.
